The soldiers of Jammu Kashmir regiment that took part in the siege of Chitral in 1895, were untried and young and equipped with worn out snider rifles, but they were placed against superior numbers, better equipped and a more experienced enemy.
The Dogra soldiers were in a position which required all the finest qualities of a soldier. They were ably lead by General Baj Singh, Colonel Jagat Singh and Major Bhikam Singh.
On 3rd March a party was sent out to determine the enemy strength. This party which had Dogra men of the Kashmir Regiment was attacked. In the fight that ensued 23 soldiers were killed and 33 wounded.
Dogra General Baj Singh, a fine old soldier and gentleman, who was always keen to be in the thickest of a fight, and whose keenness lead him to be at the front when by rights he should have been more in rear, was shot down on one side of Captain Townshend, while Major Bhikam Singh, another brave old Dogra officer, was mortally wounded on the other side.
We pay tributes to all the Dogra soldiers and this gentleman soldier and brave Dogra warrior on his Shaheedi Diwas.
