The Forgotten Massacres: Revisiting the Tragic Killings of Hindus in Jammu on 30th April 2006

Most are unaware of the mass killings of Hindus in Jammu Region over the years. 30th April in 2006 was the worst night for mountain hamlets of Kulhand & Tharva, in Doda, Jammu Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists gathered villagers & fired point blank killing 22 men,women & children including a 3 years old girl.

Heads of family were made to gather this night of 30th April 2006 in Doda, Jammu & terrorists continued to fire till their ammunition was exhausted.

There was no police picket in the village & the army camp was at a distance. The massacre happened late in the night & police & army personnel reached the remote hamlets only in the morning. Villagers carried some of the injured to District hospital at Doda, a 3 hr trek by road.

Some of those killed that night – Shashi Ram, Satish, Gopi Chand, Jagdish Lal, Sapna Devi, Maghar Singh, Ram Raj, Sunder Dass, Ramesh Kumar, Sadhu Ram, Saroop Ram, Kumar Singh Rana, Bhagat Singh, Romal Singh, Gori, Kunj Lal, Prem Nath, Pritam Singh, Panchi Ram.

The same night hours before the brutal killings in Doda, 13 Hindu shepherds in Udhampur district of Jammu, who were high on the mountains with their herds for pasture were gathered and taken to the adjoining forests and shot.

The 2 shepherds who were allowed to go while the others were shot in the in the forests of Basantgarh,Udhampur the same night of 30th April 2006, were Siraj-ud-din & his son Rukun-ud-din. 13 other shepherds were killed mercilessly for being Hindu.
