Embark on a Sacred Journey: The Hudh Mata Yatra

Every year, the picturesque Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir comes alive with the vibrant energy of the Hudh Mata Yatra—an annual pilgrimage that draws devotees from far and wide. Dedicated to Hudh Mata, the local manifestation of Goddess Parvati, this cherished event is celebrated with immense fervor on the 8th day of the bright lunar fortnight in the month of Haar, typically falling in late June or early July.

Spiritual Essence of the Yatra

The Hudh Mata Yatra is steeped in rich mythology. Hudh Mata is revered as Parvati in local tradition, remembered for her act of self-immolation in her father’s yagna to protest the insult of Lord Shiva. The shrine is considered the sacred abode of the Shiv Parivar—Bhagwan Shiva, Devi Parvati, and Bhagwan Ganesha—making it a powerful site of devotion and unity.

Sacred Sites and Divine Wonders

Pilgrims are drawn to the Hudh Mata shrine and the mystical Tri Sandhiya cave, where three naturally formed ice lingams symbolize Shiva, Parvati, and Ganesha. The cave’s ceiling features a unique natural formation resembling an udder, from which milky lime water drips onto the lingams, creating an atmosphere of divinity and reverence.

The Pilgrimage Route and Schedule

The yatra traditionally commences at Dharalan Nagri in Kathua, with overnight stays in Jammu, Kishtwar, Sounder, Dilgooth, and Kaikooth before reaching the main shrine. For 2025, the journey began with a sacred Jagran at Dharalan Nagri Kathua on June 26, with the main pilgrimage events unfolding from June 27 to July 3.

Nature’s Splendor Along the Way

Beyond its spiritual significance, the Hudh Mata Yatra offers breathtaking Himalayan vistas. Pilgrims encounter the Trisandhya Jaldhara—a rare stream that flows three times a day—alongside the serene Braham Sarovar, the majestic Doodh Ganga, and awe-inspiring views of the Brahma Peak, blending natural beauty with spiritual devotion.

A Growing Tradition

What began as a local festival for the people of Dachhan has blossomed into a major regional event, now attracting pilgrims from across Kishtwar and beyond. The Hudh Mata Yatra stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and the timeless traditions that unite devotees in their shared journey.

Join the Hudh Mata Yatra and experience a pilgrimage like no other—where faith, nature, and tradition converge in the heart of the Himalayas.
